British-Indian soprano Elizabeth Karani began her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and where she won the Elizabeth Harwood prize, the Dame Eva Turner Award and the Elsie Thurston Award, before joining the opera school at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is a former Park Lane Young Artist, Equilibrium Young Artist and an alumna of the National Opera Studio.
Elizabeth’s many operatic projects include her Royal Opera House debut as Nanna/Embla in the premiere of The Monstrous Child, Gretel Hansel & Gretel for ENO/Regent’s Park, Amy in the British premiere of Mark Adamo’s Little Women, Musetta La bohème, Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, and, most recently, Galatea Acis & Galatea (all for Opera Holland Park), as well as Gismonda Ottone and Drusilla L’incoronazione di Poppea (both for English Touring Opera).

Last season, Elizabeth made her role debut as Norina Don Pasquale for Diva Opera on tour to South Africa, France and the UK. She also created the role of Pamina in Damon Albarn’s The Magic Flute II: The Curse at Théâtre du Lido, Paris, sang Female Chorus The Rape of Lucretia for English Touring Opera and summer 2025 saw Elizabeth’s debut with Grange Park Opera as Jahanara in the world premiere of Nishat Khan’s Taj Mahal.
Future seasons see returns to Opera Holland Park as Despina Così fan tutte and Buxton Festival as Valencienne The Merry Widow plus debuts at Opéra de Lausanne, Opéra de Toulon and in Japan. For Salon Opera, Elizabeth will perform Micaëla Carmen, Rosalinde Die Fledermaus, Violetta La Traviata, Tatyana Eugene Onegin and her debut performance of Strauss’ Four Last Songs.
Her other eclectic roles include Isabella L’inganno felice for West Green House Opera, Rutilia Lucio Papirio Dittatore with the Buxton International Festival and La Serenissima, Rosalinde Die Fledermaus and Berta Il barbiere de Siviglia for Diva Opera, Tatyana Eugene Onegin for Mid Wales Opera and Cino in Vivaldi’s Teuzzone for La Serenissima.
Elizabeth has also sung Jano Jenufa for Longborough Festival Opera, Jay The Cunning Little Vixen for Garsington Opera, Tartagliona in Jonathan Dove’s The Little Green Swallow, Angel Jephtha (with Harry Christophers), plus Female Chorus The Rape of Lucretia, Eleanora Le Donne Curiose, Atalanta Xerses, Armande in Martinu’s Alexandre Bis, Frasquita Carmen, Orestes La Belle Hélène, La Chauve-Souris L’enfant et les sortilèges, Helena A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Micaëla Carmen, Helmwige Die Walküre, Waldvogel Siegfried, Mademoiselle Silberklang Der Schauspieldirektor, Lucy The Telephone and Suor Genovieffa Suor Angelica.
Elizabeth has made her concert debuts at the Gasteig (Munich), alongside conductor Barbara Hannigan and the Munich Philharmonic, Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Hall, the Bridgewater Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Westminster Abbey, the Xi’an Concert Hall (Xi’an, China), Musique Cordiale (Provence, France) and at La Folle Journée (Nantes, France).
